WHO FOOTS THE PRIVATE GUEST FOOD BILL?

November 11th, 2008, 9:05 am by Dan Lehr

(PHOTO: Ron Edmonds of the AP)

“Movie Fan” writes

“I heard recently that, despite all the perks that come with living in the white house, the first family still has to pay for any food that their private guests consume.”

Based on what I’ve found, you are correct.

An excerpt from the book “America’s First Families” reads

“The cost of feeding personal guests or even those at a strictly political event is paid out of pocket by the presidential family, or underwritten by a private donor. This can be exorbitant, even for those with great family wealth like Hoover & Kennedy, both of whom donated their salaries to charity.”

I hope that answers your question, Movie Fan - & if you have a question about the presidency you want me to research, I hope you’ll ask! It’s what I’m here for!

James, commenting on this post:

“in a election year it is not uncommon for candidates to miss voting because of the time spent campaigning.” .

Sheryl, on (apparently) Obama:

“I am wondering how we will give a president security clearance when he associates with known terrorists?”

What do you think? Speak up! We want to hear your thoughts, too!

Margaret had 2 comments on the 2nd debate:

“They both did well - however, those who watched really learned what each one wanted to do. So it was good for people to understand their differences.
One Republican woman told me she hopes that Obama can do all he wanted to do. She was impressed with Obama. She thought McCain said something new
[McCain's mortgage bailout plan], but “what in the world is that about?”

&

“Another thought - we didn’t get to hear enough from the “town meeting” as the moderator did more of the questions.”

I agree with that last point.

Sandra says

“I STILL THINK FRED DALTON THOMPSON IS THE BEST POSSIBLE CHOICE FOR PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES”

If only Fred agreed with you, Sandra.

What do you want to say? Now’s your chance! All views are welcome!

“Dan, I have a question that I haven’t heard addressed. If the rhetoric concerning Mr. Obama and his so-called terrorist connection is not true, then why hasn’t he denied it? Mr. McCain has rejected and denied Mr. Obama’s allegations vehemently. Has anyone else seen these contradictions besides me? Please address these questions. Thank you very much.” -Chuck

Chuck, scroll up to the “Barack Obama” post to see what Obama had to say about it on the stump yesterday.

It’s also pertinent to see what Obama said when he first faced the question, all the way back in April during the ABC primary debate between Obama & Clinton:

YouTube Preview Image

GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS: “…a follow-up on this issue, general theme of patriotism, in your relationships. A gentleman named William Ayers. He was part of the Weather Underground in the 1970s. They bombed the Pentagon, the Capitol, and other buildings. He’s never apologized for that.

And, in fact, on 9/11, he was quoted in the New York Times saying, “I don’t regret setting bombs. I feel we didn’t do enough.” An early organizing meeting for your State Senate campaign was held at his house and your campaign has said you are “friendly.”

Can you explain that relationship for the voters and explain to Democrats why it won’t be a problem?

OBAMA: George, but this is an example of what I’m talking about. This is a guy who lives in my neighborhood, who’s a professor of English in Chicago who I know and who I have not received some official endorsement from. He’s not somebody who I exchange ideas from on a regular basis.

And the notion that somehow as a consequence of me knowing somebody who engaged in detestable acts 40 years ago, when I was 8 years old, somehow reflects on me and my values doesn’t make much sense, George.

The fact is that I’m also friendly with Tom Coburn, one of the most conservative Republicans in the United States Senate, who, during his campaign, once said that it might be appropriate to apply the death penalty to those who carried out abortions.

Do I need to apologize for Mr. Coburn’s statements? Because I certainly don’t agree with those, either.

So this kind of game in which anybody who I know, regardless of how flimsy the relationship is, that somehow their ideas could be attributed to me, I think the American people are smarter than that. They’re not going to suggest somehow that that is reflective of my views, because it obviously isn’t.”

& new Vote08 commenter Randy weighs in with 3 (!) comments (thank you!):

#1 “why are the american people not being told about obamas ties to iran and about his books condiming his white heitage and his pleadge to be muslim if the political wind turn ugly from Adimosity of Hope .he also qouted as saying he denied his mothers race and glinged to his fathers . I am not a repuplican or a demacrate.I am for the american people . and I believe america needs to reform and do away with life time polititions life time pay for them and limits to terms to no more 2.
It is suposed to be a goverment for the people and by the people. Not of the politions and by the politions .WE blame the president of everything but if congress was voting the way we wanted them too they could over ride the president.”

#2 “do we not relize that no one man can change the way things are going it takes our goverment togather to make changes not just one man. we need to examine all the ponits not just what the media points out to use read obamas books to see the real man .if congress wanted to control gas prices they could but they must be making money from the oil companys too. we need to clean out congress and start over . there has to be something wrong when it cost millions dollars far a 300000 a year job. it was never ment to be that way .

#3 “also Clinton looked good because of Reaganonmics and bush looks bad because naftia which was pasted my congress and clinton . naftia is killing our economics and sending our jobs over seas and to mexicao Most presidents spend their first term reacting to what he inherites from the last one .Clinton and congress also pasted the
fair housing laws that are pleging us now . people bought houses they could not aford because it change from using credit to dept percentages to. Lets change the intrest rate to get them in a house . then when the intrest rate changed by goes the house.”

What’s your take? Let’s hear it! All viewpoints are welcome.

FRIDAY FEEDBACK: PLENTY OF SARAH TO GO AROUND EDITION “VARIOUS OPINIONS ON SARAH PALIN” “VARIED OPINIONS ON SARAH PALIN”

September 5th, 2008, 4:38 pm by Dan Lehr

george-w-bush_college_cheerleader.jpggeorge-w-bush_college_cheerleader.jpggeorge-w-bush_college_cheerleader.jpg

(above: George W. Bush, when he was a college cheerleader)

[what's with the series of quotes in the headline of this post? bear with me.  I'm conducting an internet experiment. ]

Thanks to everyone who gave me their two cents this week! What a week it was! One of the most active yet here on the Vote08 Blog! _vote08blog3.jpg

Here’s what you’ve been saying - mostly about Palin:

“We can really vote for a good looking woman! However, what will we do about Sen. Ted Stevens from Alaska?” - Lee

“Having just spent some time in Alaska taking with the “real” people (small business owners, small commercial fishermen and loggers, construction workers and supervisors, and many, many local wage earners,) she is a great pick. They say so. Ted Stevens? Please research what she has said, as govorner, about the senior senator. Alaskans still believe in innocent until proven guilty, not guilty by implication in a news story. Her ethics, ideals, and ambitions match those of hard-working Americans. All this and she is a working mom, too. While you are at it, check out her husband. He is the epitome of Hard-Work University himself! In addition, check out their kids. You can’t help but be impressed, especially after what the Democrat Convention came up with.” - Jim

“Yay, we can all wish President Obama well, now that John has handed the presidency to him on a silver platter. She will NOT appeal to the Hillary voters he thinks she will, she is too rabidly right wing. And how many right wing men want a woman one step away from the White House? I see Bob Barr doing a bit better than expected… Also, look up Wooten-gate.” - Jason

“A woman with a degree in journalism who is conservative? Now THAT’S an oxymoron! Better to have a sharp, well-versed woman one heart-beat away from the White House than an inexperienced elitist!” - Jim

This takes care of the “holier than thou” stance of Ms. Palin and the religious right and reflects negatively on John McCain’s judgement in picking Ms. Palin as his running mate. If the daughter is part of a committed couple, why are they not already married? This will be a shotgun wedding and I feel sorry for the potential husband and the baby to be part of such a hypocritical family.

“As a Hillary supporter, who equally liked and now supports Barack Obama, I was flabbergasted at the pick of Ms. Palin– Hillary, like Barack, ran her campaign not on the basis of gender ( or race), but on qualifications and ideas. The choice of Palin– and her own acknowledgment that she is running as a female first–is cynical and insulting to women. She obviously has a lot on her plate, and as a relatively young woman has plenty of time to get involved in national politics when she is done nursing her baby and helping her daughter through a difficult time. This is not a “sexist” remark– I am a 66 year old feminist female who has been helping to raise her stepson for 21 years. She should put her family first and go back to her job in Alaska where she is apparently doing a good job and leave national politics to the more qualified.” - Susanne

“Many parents can’t make sure their children don’t do what they want them to do. So I think it is important to look at what Palin can do in our country, not about her families.” - Margaret

“We cannot judge people on the challenges with which they are presented, but how they accomplish great thing by meeting those challenges. Look forward to Governor Palin being our next Vice President. She is obviously the best person for the job.” - Jim

“I agree the daughter is not fair game but what about her mother’s decision to place her pregnant seventeen year old in the media glare? Obama was accused to doing anything to get himself elected by Mc
Cain but Palin appears to be putting her personal ambition above her family’s needs in this matter.” - Sue

“Well, what CAN Sarah do for the country if she can’t even instill the “family value” of waiting until marriage or even graduation to have sex? I want my leaders to lead by example. She needs to get her house in order before she tells me how to run mine. She is WAY to religiously extreme to brush this off as “well, this happens in the best of families.” This is hypocrisy like I have never seen. She even wanted to personally ban books in the town library when she was a mayor!! This lady is scary dangerous, everyone should read up on her extremism.” - Jason

“In regards to the charts, I am not a big Biden fan. I am surely not a big Palin fan. But if I had to say who I would want to lead as president between the two (if they had to step in), it would have to be Biden. How could anyone chose otherwise? She has been mayor for a town with a population below 10k!!! Now she is governor of a state with more bears than people (could be true, I don’t know…). Does that make me less likely to vote McCain? Yes! How can it not? Quit fooling yourselves by thinking otherwise.” - Jason

“I think she is a very wise choice to run for Vice President. And as far as instilling family values, you can only go so far. You raise your children the best you can and they (not the parents) are responsible for their decisions, good or bad. SHAME ON THE MEDIA, including News Channel 9 for giving this so much attention. This pregnancy should be a private family matter, it has NOTHING to do with whether or not she is a good VP candidate. I am not an Obama fan but I will say AMEN to his stand on this subject, let this family deal with this privately!!!” - Terri

“Go McCain. Good choice!” - Renigeid

“The children of candidates have historically been off limits, there is no reason that young Bristol should be any different. A press release was made to prevent the media and the mindless masses from screming that there was a cover-up. Palin has not in any way thrown her daughter to the sharks, she’s merely trying to make the best of a Catch-22. And to those that question Palin’s stand on Abstinence Only education in school I would say that you cannot have it both ways. The schools are funded by tax dollars. No tax dollars pay for abortions or adoptions so the only responsible stand (based on that thought) is abstinence. Parents, family, or maybe a family doctor can educate one-on-one better than the teachers (most of which are trained in literature, science, math, and liberal arts, not philosophy, theology, or anatomy and physiology). Leave this young woman alone. And look at Mrs. Palin’s experience as it pertains to the job at hand. Learn what she has done or not done in her various elected positions. Which parent among us would want our employer to judge us based on our home life?? I love my children, But I’m not sure I want my next raise to be based on how well they behave when they out being teenagers, learning to be themselves and testing their God-given freewill.” - Amanda

“I have been a life-long conservative democrat, but I don’t understand what all the fuss is about with Mrs. Palin’s daughter. #1-She didn’t try to hide this from anyone #2–she’s “walking her talk” by not aborting her grandchild, to save family face. Can the same be said for the Kennedys, or the Clintons, or the Roosevelts? Why can’t both sides stick to issues and what can help the country? If this is what politics is really all about, then I’m glad I went with the military and medical services. A good dose of truth might help too!!!!” - Chuck

“Will McCain always do his gambling as president like he did when he decided to pick Palin?” - Margaret

I think this is a great pick and if everyone can heed your advice to open their mind about it, we’ll be in much better shape.

“Also, to the comment: “Palin appears to be putting her personal ambition above her family’s needs..” - Sue…. I think Rudy Giuliani said it best this morning when he pointed out that this question has not been raised with Barack Obama, even though he has two young daughters. I look forward to her speech tonight.” - Nathan

“Sarah Palin is the most unqualified candidate for the V.P. in my lifetime (I am 67 years old) and it is disgusting that John McCain can even try to justify such a selection. It reflects the shallow measure of John McCain’s ability to make sensible decisions. God Help Us if we are saddled with a Republican administration for another 4 years!” - Glenn

“Sarah Palin has the country in an uproar, and for good reason…the liberal left is running in fear of losing this election. John McCain vs Barack Obama would have been a close race, but McCain/Palin vs Obama/Biden will be an embaassment for the liberal left. The only way to hurt McCain is to destroy Sarah Palin, and the only way to destroy her is to destroy her daughter. Anyone who associates themselves with liberalism should be hanging their heads in shame for the way the liberal media is attcking Sarah’s daughter. I am looking forward, as are most people to hearing Governor Palin’s speach tonight. Isn’t it funny that when discussing experience all the liberal media has to say for Governor Palin is that she was the mayor of a small town in Alaska. Obama on the otherr hand has no leadership experience at all, he started campaigning for president the moment he took the oath of office as a Senator. John McCain was not my first choice for the candidate of my party, I voted for Mike Huckabee, but I do not think Senator McCain could have chosen a better running mate.” - William

“If our enemy is ever Polar Bears or Eskimos, she’s the one we need! If I were a betting person, I’d bet this decision will come back and bite Senator McCain squarely in the buttocks. Rest assured if she’s done all she is rumored to have done, she’s made some enemies along the way. When dealing with foreign countries-I don’t think beauty will change their minds. They don’t recognize women in the same light we do-people they should have to deal with and they won’t!” - Brenda

“I’m an Obama voter who has been nervous about this pick. Only this morning can wrap my brain around why. McCain’s team spent the last days setting the bar laughably low. They’re playing victim of the liberal media. Palin appears as an average, normal, clean-scrubbed family type; yet she has a secret vicious-predator side; firing political enemies, hypocritical family history, burning books… She’s the female George W Bush.” - Bill

“In regard to the “Bush” presidency, no one should make any judgements without first walking in his steps. How many presidents have taken office and immediately, the country was attacked by someone whose only objective was to destroy the lives of innocent people? What do you do? I got mad and I’m still mad. We should never forget what happened on 9-11, 2001. I’m sure Mr. Bush won’t . Unfortunately, it seems as though many in congress and in the media have. We cannot afford to bicker among ourselves and forget who’s trying to destroy our country. We need to unite as “one nation, under God” again. Thankyou!!!” - Chuck

“I’m still having a hard time understanding how the bar can be set low when she has as much experience as Obama. Even though it’s not in Washington, it still counts.” - Nathan

“Politics is a dirty, nasty business. Palin sure seems like she has Hillary as a hero. She can fling mud, lies and contempt almost better than both Clintons put together! She’ll go far, but she won’t be VP in 08. Fairer sex indeed.” - Jason

& there were other, non-Palin comments as well…

“I think Cindy McCain should be the one for vice-president. She has been doing so much and enjoyed listening to her. A independent intelligent lady has been worried about what will cause McCain with his 5 years in his war to give him problems.” - Margaret

“I thought the content was outstanding despite the less then superb delivery. There are so many issues for [McCain] to deal with in the speech of his life that I think he could have went on for several hours. I appreciated that he spoke more about his family and the change he hopes to bring and not spend much time bashing the other candidate. Overall grade: A-” - Nathan

“For both of the candidates, I think it is important they keep in mind Matthew 6:33, “Seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” God rewards those who live His will and not their own. Also for Obama and his response of “That’s above my pay grade,” to the question of “When does life begin.” Psalm 139:13 says,” For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.” There are plenty of other passages that make it clear life is a precious gift and should not be intentionally terminated before birth.” - Nathan (responding to this post)

“I hope the RNC Convention gets as much play as the DNC when Gustav dies down. It would be sad for the most important election in a long time to be lopsided when it comes to convention coverage. Maybe the Republicans could hold a big convention-like rally when there is no threat of hurricanes to the U-S.” - Nathan

_vote08blog3.jpgI hope you can tell that all points of view are welcome here. I am so glad all of you are spirited enough to comment! I also hope you stay engaged, & you certainly can do that by reading this blog! Once again, thanks for voicing your views!!

UNBALANCED COVERAGE, PART 2

July 23rd, 2008, 12:01 pm by Dan Lehr

unbalanced-scales.png

Thanks to all who weighed in on my question I posed to you: is the media giving Obama coverage that’s a little too favorable?

Here’s what some of you had to say:

“Of course it is unbalanced! It has been since Obama announced his campaign for the presidency. No one in the news media has questioned him why, if he is interested in the Iraq situation, he has not visited in the last 900 days.” - Louis Priddy

“I think Obama gets more coverage and positive feedback from the media no matter what he does.” - Lisa

I’m sure that it wasn’t meant to be biased, but the on-going coverage of Mr. Obama makes many believe that “the news media” is looking for another champion. I truly wish that all news media would just report the news and not try to make or sway it. That tends to not only take away credibility from the news agencies, but it also leads many to just “down-right” distrust them. That’s not at all good; not for the media and certainly not for the country. At least try to show the better side of both candidates and not just point out their mistakes. Thank you for at least asking. - C. Waller

Thanks again, & I hope you all comment a lot more in the future.

_vote08blog13.jpgA thought. I think some of the concerns people have is not that they themselves are swayed by the media, but that there are countless others who will be. I would recommend to those of you who feel this way to sit back & take a deep breath. You yourselves have figured out how to tell facts from bias - it’s a different world with the internet, & that’s forced us all to be more skeptical, but at the same time, do more homework. You should have faith that the rest of the American electorate is learning this as they go, too. It goes back to the advice that we should vary our media diet & decide for ourselves what is “fact” & what is “bias.”

& most importantly: Do not make your choice for president this November based on who gets favorable or unfavorable media coverage! It’s your patriotic duty to make your decision based on YOUR feelings about a candidate, not the media’s!

FRIDAY FEEDBACK

June 20th, 2008, 4:19 pm by Dan Lehr

george-w-bush_college_cheerleader.jpggeorge-w-bush_college_cheerleader.jpggeorge-w-bush_college_cheerleader.jpg

This week Vote08’s seen more comments than it has in a while! & for that we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

I’ve always intended for this blog to be a forum for your thoughts & opinions as much as if not more than my posts. So if you’re visiting for the first time or are a long-time lurker — please! Speak up!

Here’s what you’ve been commenting on this week:

1. georgiaspace.jpg“Georgia Peach” says on our thoughts on Georgia being a battleground state,

“I think these guys have it more correct.”

True enough, GP! & we had more on that poll earlier today here. The big “X” factor with this poll & all others this year, however, is new voter turnout. Every poll is a measurement of how registered voters feel. But if either candidate can bring new voters to the polls, that changes the equation & cannot be accurately predicted.

2. obama-tv.jpg“Jim” writes of Obama’s 1st general election campaign ad:

“Reaction to this ad: As Charlie Brown would say, “ARRRRRRRGGGGGG!”

Actually, Jim, it’s augh.jpg. But we understand what you mean. Can we infer by your comment that you’re a Republican?

3. oil_drill2.jpgAnswer: yes we can! Here’s what Jim had to say about President Bush’s plan to drill offshore:

“Where do most European counties get their energy? Nuclear energy of course.

What is the most efficient propulsion system for the US Navy? The nuclear generators on the USS Regan could probably supply Chattanooga’s energy needs.

Geothermal energy will last as long as humans inhabit this planet.

In the time that it will take to develope economical and safe nuclear and geothermal energy sources we must depend on oil.

Kudos to President Bush for realizing this and taking a giant step for energy independence.”

4. michelle_obama.jpgJim gets the “comment-trifecta” award with this comment about Michelle Obama’s role in her husband’s campaign:

“Does BHO want somone else to defend his woman?”

5. meghan-registers.jpg We couldn’t “approve” it because the entire comment wasn’t printable in a family blog, but “Jason 69″ says of Meghan McCain:

“Well she get’s my vote for hottest “first daughter” in history.”

6. mccainthompson1.jpg “Winghunter” takes us to task for reporting old news on the Thompson announcement last Sunday that he’s not interested in the veep slot:

“First, this “news” is nearly two months old and as always Fred spelled out exactly why VP is a waste of his time and clearly an obvious waste of his correct patriotism, real experience and genuine qualifications…even if certain disloyal residents haven’t performed their responsibility in finding out who he is.

Second, “stories” made up by idiots are only believed by bigger ones.”

Winghunter, I sincerely hope you’re not calling me an idiot, but regardless, thanks for sharing, & better luck next time!

7. thompson.jpg Joe Lance, who runs the other essential Tennessee Valley campaign blog you should check on a regular basis, had a different take on Thompson:

“It’s all very humorous, really: the story came out a while back that Fred Thompson had never really intended to run for President; that supporters had floated his name as a possible candidate in order to boost his chances at being the VP pick.

And now he doesn’t want that?”

8. boomers-turn-40.jpg“Stewart” disagrees with my assessment that John McCain & Barack Obama are of certain generations in our post comparing 2008 to 2004:

“great reasoning. McCain is not a Boomer but you want to call him a Boomer, Obama is a Boomer but you don’t want to call them that. and everything comes together. the new American logic!”

My response: “Well.. technically you’re right, Stewart. The baby boom generation was born between 1946 & 1964. But when I characterize the two of them as of or not of the baby boom generation, I’m speaking more in cultural terms. McCain’s early life is defined by his participation in Vietnam in the 1960s. Obama, even though technically a baby boomer, did not come of age until after the turbulent 60s & early 70s were over. It is not a trait that defines who he is. Again, I’m defining things in cultural terms here. But you’re right.”

9. guantanamo2.jpg Gary Poole disagrees with the recent Supreme Court decision that allows terrorist suspects at Guantanamo Bay petition the court to challenge their detention:

“It is one thing for an enemy to kill our soldiers. Although I do not like it in the least, I can respect the man who did it and the his courage. It is quite another thing for an enemy to kill innocent civilians. I have no respect for them or their lack of courage. As far as I am concerned, when they joined a conspiracy to kill non combatant women and children, they lost all legal rights in our judicial system. I will agree that we need to do away with the detainee camps at Guantanamo…execute all the detainees and let Allah have them.”

To which I responded

“Thanks for commenting, Gary! Here’s my question for you, though: in what way do you determine beyond a doubt that a suspect in custody “joined a conspiracy to kill non-combatant women & children?” How do you do this without a court hearing? Who is the person who decides a person’s guilt or innocence (& if guilt, decides if that guilt warrants death?) That’s the problem right now - we have no way of making the leap from terrorist suspect.. to proven terrorist. Some of the suspects held at Guantanamo have been proven to be completely innocent of charges - they were just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Should these people be executed, too? If you say yes, how can you call that justice?

To which Mr. Poole responded:

”Lieutenant Calley from the Vietnam era comes to mind. I wonder if he had the time to be that analytical as to what the proper response should be while his platoon was taking the majority of fire coming at his platoon from the rear, from the village he was supposed to be defending? Which was the higher obligation…the rights of the villagers or the lives of his men? I am not trying to be cute, all I am saying is that the man wearing the uniform and carrying the rifle looks at it a little differently than a courtroom lawyer or judge acting with months/years of hindsight. For the vast majority of situations, I am in complete agreement with you but I am of a completely different mindset when it comes to someone trying to destroy my country. Like the old English toast”To Great Britain… and to hell with her enemies””

10. obama_pointing.jpg& finally, “Margaret” says on Obama’s website to “Fight-the-Smears,”:

“Much if not most intolerance is at base a stupfying ignorance rather than a deeply rooted conviction.”

That post also caused a “Muslim against Sharia” to comment that Obama was being unfair to his faith. You can read more of that exchange here.

_vote08blog19.jpgWhew! Thanks to all of you who took time to weigh in with your opinion! & I hope this encourages the rest of you that visit that all viewpoints are welcome, even if & especially when they differ from mine!

Have a great weekend!

SUPER TUESDAY’S HERE, BABY!

Welcome to Super Tuesday on Vote08.

This post looks at how each candidate stands today, February 5th, and see if we’ll be able to reach any conclusions about each party’s nominee when all the votes are counted.. which may not be finished until tomorrow!

Here’s the latest results in our latest NewsChannel9.com web poll as of 3 this afternoon:

Which of these major presidential candidates would you most like to see win the White House in November?

Hillary Clinton - 30%

Mike Huckabee - 31%

John McCain - 18%
