WASHINGTON (AP) - Not only is Barack Obama asking his donors to help pay off Hillary Rodham Clinton’s campaign debt — he’s written her a check of his own.
Obama met this evening with Clinton’s top financial backers, and told them he had personally donated $2,300 to her campaign. That’s the most he can contribute under federal law.
Clinton donors have been frustrated that Obama hasn’t done more to help Clinton retire her debt of more than 20 million dollars, even as they are being asked to help fund the Obama campaign.
A former Democratic congressman who was at the closed meeting in Washington says Obama got a standing ovation from the more than 200 Clinton donors who were there, when he said he’d enlist his supporters to help pay off her debt.
Clinton adviser Terry McAuliffe says the room “erupted” when Clinton and Obama arrived.
It was part of a two-day effort to show unity between the former rivals. They’re headed to New Hampshire for a Friday campaign appearance.
Behind the scenes, the two sides are negotiating just how involved Clinton will be in Obama’s general election campaign.
