Above is a picture of the man who would be my Congressman if I had stayed where I was born & raised, in northwest Missouri, Sam Graves (R).

He is in a race for re-election, & his opponent is a former mayor of Kansas City.

In his latest ad, he apparently has not either seen or heeded the recent memo from Newt Gingrich (essential reading if you’re rooting for the Repubs to win this year) which warns GOP House members not to tread on a familiar path this year, if victory is the ultimate goal:

So.. “San Francisco Values” are… interracial dancing from 1988? Huh?

These ads have been attempted before already this year, in Mississippi, Illinois & Louisiana. In all three cases, they failed miserably.

Ever since the debacle that was the local, state & federal response to Hurricane Katrina, I have believed that voters have changed their mindset to reward politicians who can produce results among their constituencies. & election from 2006 and this year back that theory up.

If you are going to win an election in 2008, you had better be prepared to show voters how you have made their lives easier. Using Lee Atwater-style election tactics, we certainly hope, have welcomingly become passe.’ Too bad Graves hasn’t seen the light that members of his own party are urgently trying to show him.

What do you think?
