LABELS HURT DEMOCRACY

An editorial in this morning’s Chattanooga Times Free Press (Free Press side) titled “With Sen. Thompson out…” has this quote:
“…all three of the Democrats are extreme liberals and all four of the Republicans are, according to their records and pronouncements, only “semiconservatives.” So no fully sound conservative remains.”
Folks, this year we’re seeing one of the most important elections of our lifetimes. Applying labels like “extreme” and “semi-” only continue the hyper-partisanship we’ve had far too big a helping of in recent years.
All of the candidates on both sides of the aisle deserve careful, measured examination. Discounting one or the other because “he’s too much this way” or “she’s too much that way” makes it easy. This election is hard.
Those who value ideological purity or impurity over the potential for effective governance ignore the lessons of 1964 and 1972 at their own peril.
